(NASDAQ:TMC) announced that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had determined that the consolidated deep-seabed mining application submitted by its US subsidiary, TMC USA LLC, is in substantial compliance with the requirements of the Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act. This means that the company is now closer to commencing to commercially mine polymetallic nodules in the Pacific Ocean.
TMC USA filed the consolidated application earlier this year, and it covers an approximately 65,000 square kilometer exploration and commercial recovery area in the Clarion Clipperton Zone, or CCZ. This is a stretch of the Pacific seafloor between Hawaii and Mexico. TMC USA’s initial commercial recovery permit application, filed in April 2025, only covered around 25,000 square kilometers. According to the press release, the expanded area contains an estimated 619 million tons of wet polymetallic nodules, and that there is potential for an additional 200 million tons from exploration upside.
The nodules on the seafloor contain critical metals including nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese. These materials, said TMC, are central to battery production, defense systems, clean energy infrastructure, and advanced electronics. As such, the CCZ is now at the heart of the global critical minerals race, noted TMC.
